The excitement was high as 395 Z-line sows and gilts arrived at the new Topigs Norsvin nucleus farm Innova Canada in mid-April 2023. See image above.
This batch was brought in from its nucleus farm Paradise Valley—also in Manitioba—that supports the Topigs Norsvin genetic structure across Canada, through the US, and into Mexico. Topigs Norsvin Canada is headquartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Topigs Norsvin, a leading global swine genetics company headquartered in Vught, North Brabant, Netherlands, said that further shipments will soon be made to bring a total Z-line order of 750 sows and 1,600 gilts in to the Innova Canada farm.
Innova Canada is located near Plumas, Manitoba, in an area with a low pig density—which along with strict biosecurity protocols, transportation rules, and high levels of health monitoring, ensures the highest health status and continuity of supply of the Z-line pigs.
Within this new Z-line nucleus, is the implementation of group gestation and loose farrowing. The aim is to be fully compliant with future Canadian welfare legislation, as well as legislation in other countries.
Of course, this also means that the genetic Z-line will be bred for this type of housing—something that Topigs Norsvin said is leading the way in and helping its clients be better prepared.
The new nucleus farm Innova Canada in Manitoba is being called an important step in the ongoing development of Topigs Norsvin. The company said that Innova Canada will contribute to the further acceleration of genetic progress in the Z-line and the faster dissemination of this genetic progress to its customers worldwide.
The company hopes that it will also lead to accelerated genetic progress.
