A rural Manitoba community is home to the province’s newest RCMP detachment.

The Manitoba RCMP officially opened the Niverville Municipal Detachment at 329A Bronstone Drive on Nov. 3.

This brings the number of RCMP detachments in the province to 80.

“We are extremely proud to officially open this new detachment to better serve the ever growing and vibrant community of Niverville,” Assistant Commissioner Scott McMurchy, Commanding Officer of the Manitoba RCMP, said in a statement. “Many of our officers live in the community with their families and I know they are looking forward to providing the very best in policing services to a community they call home.”

Four officers and one public service employee will staff the new detachment.

The location will offer criminal record and vulnerable sector checks, and special occasion licences.

The St-Pierre-Jolys detachment will also serve the people of Niverville.

Work to bring an RCMP location to Niverville started years ago.

A study in 2018 looked at multiple potential policing solutions for the community.

The study, prepared by Rick Hieber, a former police chief in Winkler, determined a contract with the RCMP could be a good option.

Construction to renovate an existing building in the community started in 2023.

Crime has been increasing in Niverville.

The 2024 Crime Severity Index, for example, which monitors the severity level of police-reported crime, shows the community experienced a 137.7 per cent increase in the severity level of violent crime.

That’s fifth most in the province behind Carman, Gimli, Stonewall, and Pinawa.

A larger community population means a need for increased police presence.

“As the Town of Niverville continues to grow, we are thankful for the RCMP presence in our community,” Myron Dyck, mayor of Niverville, said in a statement. “The opening of this new detachment is an exciting continuation of that presence and will provide peace of mind to residents that a detachment is now so close to home.”
