The Manitoba Crop Alliance (MCA) is hosting a milestone corn yield competition for growers across the province.

Previously, the Manitoba Corn Growers Association held the annual competition. Since that organization amalgamated with other producer groups in 2020, the MCA now organizes the event. Growers can expect the same great competition though, said Morgan Cott, the agronomy extension specialist, special crops with MCA.

“Everything that I did before I still do now. So, this (competition) continues and farmers are happy it's continuing,” she told Farms.com.

This year is the 50th year of the event, which began as a rivalry between friends, said Cott.

Farmers must be MCA members to compete but, if they’re interested, they can contact Cott or the MCA office.

“Farmers find a hot spot in their fields and they leave it for me. I get two 50-foot rows of corn and I go and pick it,” she said. “We weigh it, test it for moisture and bushel weight and have a little award ceremony.”

This year, the ceremony will be held virtually as part of the annual general meeting in February, said Cott.

First place in the competition receives $1,000 and a wall plaque. Second place receives $500 and a wall plaque, and third place receives $300 and a wall plaque. Individuals who place fourth to eighth receive a wall plaque.

Cott encourages anyone interested to give her a call. It’s always good to get new people involved each year, she added.

“I’d like to get farmers who have always been curious about it or farmers who have never done it before to give it a shot. … We've omitted the cost this year, … so it's free to enter. … It's something fun to be a part of,” said Cott.
