Manitoba egg producers showed their generosity last month by donating hundreds of thousands of eggs to local food banks.

In October, Manitoba Egg Farmers (MEF) contributed to donating 12,000 dozen eggs, or 144,000 eggs, to Harvest Manitoba.

To put that number into context, an online flyer from the Sobeys grocery store in Steinbach, Man., is selling one dozen eggs for $6.99.

That means Manitoba’s ag and greater community donated more than $83,000 worth of eggs to local food banks.

That total donation of individual eggs broke the record for the most eggs donated to the organization in one month.

“We’re really pleased to be able to help those in need,” Rick Lee, an MEF board member, told the Brandon Sun. “We’re farmers, we produce food, and to be able to help those in need with a healthy, nutritious food is a great thing.”

More than 83,000 Manitobans access food banks each month.

Having this generosity from farmers helps ensure families have access to good food, said Vince Barletta, CEO of Harvest Manitoba.

“In this extraordinary year, where Harvest helped more Manitobans than ever before, we are extremely grateful for the ‘eggstraordinary’ support of our egg farmers in helping us feed families across our province,” Barletta said in a statement.
