A Brunkild, Man. agribusiness is donating its winnings from a national contest to the memory of a late farmer and friend.
MK Agro won $30,000 through ADAMA Canada’s Thank A Retailer contest, which helps agribusinesses give back to their communities.
In addition to the $30,000 donation from the contest, Paul Kaminsky and Brent MacLean of MK Agro are donating another $20,000 to the Kelly Kabernick Girls High School Memorial Scholarship and Sanford Hockey Arena.
The scholarship is named after Kelly Kabernick, a grain farmer from Sanford, Man., who died in October after an accident.
“We’re excited that we get to give back to the community, especially after such a tragic accident that stung the community so hard,” Kaminsky told Farms.com today. “We’d been very good friends for a long time and he was a great supporter of our business from the beginning.”
When not on the farm, people could find Kabernick at the Sanford Hockey Arena coaching the Sanford Sabres high school team. Hockey was a big part of his life, Kaminsky said.

“He was very visible in the local hockey community,” he said. “He has five kids and four of them would play hockey. He coached many teams and even coached some of my friends growing up and through high school.”
Reinvesting into the local hockey community would make Kelly happy, Kabernick’s wife Christine said in a statement yesterday.
Three regional winners also received cash prizes of $15,000 each.
Daysland Crop Management from Daysland, Alta. is donating its winnings to the Daysland Playground Committee to help build a playground at a local school.
G-Mac’s AgTeam in Leader, Sask. is using its cash prize to help the community build an Integrated Healthcare facility and new curling rink.
And Huron Perth Ag Service from Woodham, Ont. will donate its $15,000 to Jessica’s House, a local hospice facility.
