A Manitoba ag organization is looking for corn farmers to participate in a yield competition.

The Manitoba Crop Alliance (MCA) is seeking producers for the 2022 Corn Yield Competition.

The competition, which started in 1971, recognizes farmers with high-yielding corn across the province.

Interested growers must be farmer members of the MCA.

And the MCA is looking for farmers to enter the best spots from their total corn acreages.

“The designated area must be at least two rows and a minimum of 50 feet in length. If the designated area does not meet these specifications, it will not be entered into the competition,” the contest’s rules state.

Winners will be announced during the CropConnect Conference on Feb. 15 and 16, 2023 in Winnipeg.

Eight prizes in total are available to be won.

First prize is $1,000 and a wall plaque sponsored by the company with the winning hybrid.

Second and third place receive cash prizes of $500 and $300, respectively, and wall plaques.

The remaining winners will each get a wall plaque.

The Corn Yield Competition has run each year since 1971, except for 2004 due to a widespread corn crop failure.

In 1971, M. M. Barkley won with a yield of 142 bushels per acre.

That year, Manitoba farmers harvested 9,142 acres of corn, producing 11,200 tonnes worth $550,000, Manitoba Agriculture data says.

Fast forward to 2021 when Baker Community Farms from MacGregor, Man., won with a yield of 303.3 bushels per acre.

That year, Manitoba growers harvested 364,000 acres, producing 883,000 tonnes, the ministry of agriculture says.

Morgan Cott, an agronomy extension specialist with Manitoba Crop Alliance, is picking the entries for the 2022 Corn Yield Competition.

She can be contacted at 204-750-2489 or by email.

Farms.com has contacted Cott for details about the contest.
