Experts explore AI changes in food and farming sector

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly changing the landscape of food and agriculture. Leaders in the industry now face a crucial question—will AI be a transformative opportunity or a disruptive threat?

AgriTech Capital and LSC International gathered insights from 40 experts, including AI specialists with interest in agriculture and food industry leaders keen on adopting AI. The research was structured around five practical questions that explored transformation, disruption, leadership advice, concerns, and six-month action steps.

Experts showed strong optimism for AI’s potential to solve pressing food system issues, including waste reduction, better resource use, and climate resilience.

However, they also warned of overhyped expectations and stressed the importance of leadership readiness.

Insiders viewed AI as a helpful tool for improving data-driven decisions, especially in real-time using IoT devices, sensors, and robotics. Outsiders envisioned AI revolutionizing the sector through predictive models to support better yields and financial planning.

Interestingly, the team also simulated AI interviews using ChatGPT, finding that AI could replicate expert opinions well. However, human experts still provided valuable context, especially considering real-world challenges like pests, moisture, and unpredictability in farming.

Security concerns were also highlighted. Leaders must ensure their data is protected and not misused. AI adoption isn’t just an IT task they pointed out—it’s a leadership responsibility.

The Expert Playbook offers five key recommendations:

  • Fix Your Data – Clean and organize data before deploying AI.

  • Pilot with Purpose – Begin with small, focused projects.

  • Executives Must Learn – AI literacy is vital for leaders.

  • Build Internal Skills – Invest in team capabilities before hiring outside experts.

  • Act Now – Early adopters will lead the future.

With AI moving at bullet-train speed, now is the time for food and ag leaders to prepare, innovate, and stay ahead.
