Innovative solutions shared at Leman Conference
Veterinary Pharmaceutical Solutions (VPS), a trusted partner to swine veterinarians for more than 30 years, recently presented new research at the Allen D. Leman Swine Conference in St. Paul, Minnesota. The globally recognized annual event, held September 20–23, brought together experts and producers to discuss science-based solutions for swine health challenges.
VPS shared several important studies demonstrating progress in pig health management. Healicin™ ABF, a non-prescription, antibiotic-free, and steroid-free nutritive spray cream, was shown to speed healing, manage tail bites, and reduce the risk of new tail bite cases in pig populations.
The company also highlighted Meloxicam, a prescription-only nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Research revealed that water-soluble Meloxicam improved outcomes for pigs with respiratory disease by reducing mortality and increasing the number of pigs marketed. Additional findings compiled decades of data showing the benefits of Meloxicam suspension for sows and their litters, improving health and productivity.
Student-led projects added new insights. Iowa State University intern Ella Moll presented a pilot study exploring the potential of Meloxicam to protect airways during acute Astrovirus infections. North Carolina State University intern Molly Jones introduced PigmentRx, a colorimetric tool that checks medicator dosing accuracy at the water nipple, allowing fast on-farm evaluations without specialized equipment.
