Organizers are preparing for the 7th Annual Great Ontario Yield Tour.
From Aug. 15 to 26, Farms.com Risk Management Chief Commodity Strategist Moe Agostino and Greg Stewart, agronomist with Maizex, will be touring farms across Ontario getting an up-close look at this year’s crop.
“We’ll see if we can have a back-to-back record corn and soybean crop this year,” Agostino told Farms.com. “Weather has been challenging this year and there’s a lot of those clay soils that are having a hard time drying out.”
This tour is also placing an emphasis on technology.
Drones and other pieces of technology will be used to further identify how adopting these types of equipment can help farmers.
“It’s all about artificial intelligence now,” Agostino said. “Is artificial intelligence better than what a human can do? I think it is.”
Farmers can participate in the tour in one of two ways.
Producers can choose to be a data volunteer and potentially have their farms featured in one of the regional tour videos.
Farmers who volunteer can also receive a personal yield report card with insights on lessons learned during the 2022 growing season.
Or growers can choose to be part of a scout team and help take samples during the tour.
The tour will have two in-person wrap-up events.
The first one will take place on Aug. 25 at Derks Elevator in Chesterville, Ont.
The second will happen on Sept. 1 at Discovery Farm Woodstock, home of Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show.
“We’ll have great educational demos at both events,” Agostino said. “We’ve got great speakers and great sponsors ready to engage with Ontario’s farmers.”
