First farm bill hearings set

The first will take place Feb. 1

Lawmakers have set dates for the first four farm bill hearings.

On Feb. 1, members of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry will participate in a hearing about the trade and horticulture titles of the farm bill.

“We are pleased to kick off the new year with a hearing focusing on the trade and horticulture titles of the Farm Bill,” Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow and Ranking Member John Boozman said in a joint statement. “This is the first of many hearings the Committee has planned as we gear up for the 2023 Farm Bill. We are both looking forward to a collaborative process, working with all Senators to deliver a strong Farm Bill.”

Alexis Taylor, the under secretary for trade and foreign agricultural affairs, Jenny Lester Moffit, the under secretary for marketing and regulatory programs, and Sarah Charles, the assistant to the administrator in the bureau of humanitarian assistance at the U.S. Agency for International Development, are scheduled to appear at the hearing.

The Senate ag committee has also scheduled three additional hearings.

Discussions on commodity programs, crop insurance and credit will take place on Feb. 9.

A hearing on nutrition programs will occur on Feb. 16, and a hearing on conservation and forestry programs is scheduled for March 1.

The current farm bill, enacted in December 2018, expires on September 30, 2023.
