The federal government said that it would provide $4 million to the Canadian Poultry Research Council (CPRC) to advance the country’s poultry research initiatives.
The funding supports a second poultry science cluster under Growing Forward 2 policy framework.
Research topics include enhancing poultry processing, animal welfare and environmental conservation projects.
These initiatives will focus on the development of new vaccines; examine ways to reduce the environmental impact of poultry farms, and training programs for farmers.
“Collaborative research investments such as these advance the sustainable production and profitability of the Canadian poultry industry, while further improving animal health,” Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz said in a news release.
The CPRC was created in 2001, and represents five poultry groups including: Chicken Farmers of Canada, Canadian Hatching Egg Producers, Canadian Poultry and Egg Producers Council, Egg Farmers of Canada and Turkey Farmers of Canada.
“It will enable researchers to find more immediate answers to industry issues and to provide important information to farmers, stakeholders and consumers,” said Roelef Meijer, Chair of the Canadian Poultry Research Council.
