New resource centre offers guidance and emotional support tools

Losing a pet is an emotional experience for many families, and having access to supportive information can make the healing process easier. To help caregivers during these challenging moments, the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) at the University of Guelph has launched a new online resource hub dedicated to pet loss support.

The Pet Loss Support Resource Centre, created by OVC Pet Trust, provides free and reliable tools that are easy for anyone to access.

The centre features a strong collection of evidence-informed materials, including a new video documentary series, professional interviews, downloadable guides, and links to counselling and support groups. These resources are designed to help individuals understand their emotions, learn about healthy coping strategies, and feel supported during times of grief. The initiative is among the first of its kind in North America, showing a commitment to the human–animal bond beyond clinical care.

A meaningful part of this project is the six-part documentary series Always Near Me: Navigating Pet Loss, created with award-winning Canadian filmmakers. The series shares real stories of pet owners who have experienced loss, along with expert advice from veterinary social workers and mental health professionals. Their guidance helps families learn how to approach grief, honour memories, and find comfort in shared experiences.

“These resources reflect OVC’s commitment to supporting the human–animal bond, not only through clinical excellence but also by addressing the emotional dimensions of care,” said Dr. Jeff Wichtel, dean of OVC.

This project was supported by The Banjo Fund, established in memory of a cherished Basset Hound. Its purpose is to help families and veterinary professionals face the difficult moments that follow the loss of a companion animal.

Anyone seeking support can explore the complete collection of videos, guides, and tools by visiting the resource centre online. The hub encourages healing, understanding, and a sense of community for all who need compassionate guidance.
