BASF bringing a new herbicide to soybean producers

Centurion ADV helps farmers manage volunteer corn and grassy weeds

A new herbicide is available to soybean farmers in Ontario and the rest of Eastern Canada.

BASF’s Centurion ADV is a Group 1 herbicide with clethodim as its active ingredient plus a built-in adjuvant.

“It’s going to have a great fit in soybeans,” Chris Vander Kant, soybeans and horticulture crop manager with BASF, told Farms.com.

Canola, alfalfa, potato, field peas, and sunflower crops are also listed on Centurion’s label.

And BASF recently made a label change to give farmers more options when controlling volunteer crops.

“We recently made a label expansion in order to include management of volunteer corn including Enlist corn,” Vander Kant said, adding that Enlist corn has tolerance to quizalofop.

Farmers can tank mix Centurion ADV with Liberty 200 or glyphosate for increased weed control.

In terms of application timing, the product is meant for after crops are up.

“It’s a post-emergent graminicide,” Vander Kant said. “In the case of soybeans, you could do up to flowering. Typically, application timing from a weed staging standpoint you’re somewhere between one and six leaf.”

BASF recommends 80 ac/case for best results on grassy weeds.

For volunteer corn above 6-leaf and up to 50cm, the recommended rate is 40 ac/case.

One case includes 2 6.1L jugs.

When compared to some competitor products, Centurion ADV has shown increased control for producers.

On small plot trials from London, Ont., Centurion plus glyphosate show 81 per cent efficacy on larger volunteer Enlist corn up to 50cm eight weeks after treatment.

Arrow’s All In had a 67 per cent efficacy, BASF’s data indicates.
