Artificial intelligence influences dairy labeling and perception
Artificial intelligence (AI) has quickly become a powerful tool, changing how people interact online and shaping conversations across industries. In agriculture, AI is influencing how dairy is compared with plant-based alternatives, bringing new opportunities and challenges.
When asked about nutrition, large language models such as ChatGPT highlight that cow’s milk is generally more nutritious than most plant-based drinks. AI notes milk’s natural protein, calcium, and vitamins while also emphasizing the need for transparent labeling. This aligns with long-standing concerns from the dairy industry and recent Food and Drug Administration discussions.
AI responses also reflect consumer confusion. While cow’s milk is recognized as nutrient-rich, AI often presents plant-based options as acceptable alternatives. Labeling remains a debated area, with AI suggesting plant beverages can use “milk” terms if labels clearly explain differences.
On sustainability, the conversation is more difficult for dairy. AI answers often portray plant-based drinks as environmentally better. This highlights the need for dairy farmers to share their progress. For example, U.S. dairy was the first food agriculture sector to conduct a national life cycle assessment in 2008. From 2007 to 2020, dairy reduced its greenhouse gas footprint by 13% and has set a goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
