First Canadian Canola Variety

In 1974, Dr. Baldur Sefansson, a plant breeder at the University of Manitoba, developed the first ‘double low’ variety, which reduced levels of erucic acid and glucosinolates.

The variety, marketed as Tower, was the first one to meet the requirements used to identify the crop as canola.
