CPTPP

CPTPP

The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) came into force on Dec. 30, 2018 after Canada and five other countries (Australia, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand and Singapore) ratified the agreement.

Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, Peru and Vietnam make up the remaining countries.

For Canadian ag:

  • Japan will eliminate tariffs on more than 30 per cent of Canadian ag imports,
  • Vietnam will provide duty-free access to Canadian ag within 15 years,
  • Malaysia will provide duty-free access within 15 years, and
  • Australia and New Zealand eliminated almost all their respective tariffs on Canadian ag.

During the negotiations, however, Canada opened some of its dairy market access.

Countries within the CPTPP will receive access to about 3.25 per cent of Canada’s dairy
