Increased Trade and Employment

On Jan. 14, 1937, Governor General John Buchan’s (pictured) throne speech laid out Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King’s plan for the second session of the country’s 18th Parliament.

The governor general highlighted the government’s work on a Farm Employment Plan, designed to provide employment opportunities for homeless men.

Canadian producers experienced times of high demand for farm products, and the government pledged to “continue a vigorous promotion of the sale of agricultural products at home and abroad.”
