Video: Corn Planting Depth: 5 Reasons Why it’s Important

Corn planting depth is one of the most crucial steps to set your corn crop up for success throughout the growing season. Pioneer Field Agronomist Paul Yoder has 5 reasons why its important for you to plant your corn 2 inches deep. The main two reasons are to get a nice even stand for uniform germination and two inch planting depth also helps your corn achieve uniform emergence. 2 inch planting depth gives you more consistent soil temperature and soil moisture, which leads to uniform emergence and germination. Another reason is a shallower planting depth is more susceptible to temperature fluctuations, making cold spells much more harmful to your corn. The fourth reason is closing wheels of the planter will help you firm up the seed bed when corn is planted at two inches deep. And the final reason is reducing preseason emergence stress if you’re applying pre-emergence chemistry.
