A rice huller is a modern agricultural tool used in the food processing of rice. Rice is an ancient crop and since ancient times, tools such as a mortar and pestle have been used to pound the rice in order to separate it from the husk. A rice huller works on a simple mechanism of two rollers. The unprocessed rice is feed through a funnel system and the rice moves along with gravity. As the rice passes in between the rollers, the pressure separates the husk from the grain. Rice hullers have a variety of different rollers that are used to attain different grades and results. Steel rollers are the most common. Plastic rollers are also used and can reduce the amount of breakage in grains, which increases the yield, however, they require significant maintenance. The last type of roller is a rough surface roller, which separates as well as polishes the grains.
