Saskatchewan Biodiesel Initiative Good News for Canola Farmers

The Canola Council of Canada (CCC) applauds the Government of Saskatchewan for boosting the biodiesel industry with a $26 million program to encourage biodiesel manufacturing in the province.

The announcement in yesterday’s provincial budget aims to stimulate growth in the province’s biodiesel industry by providing a 13-cent-per-litre grant to renewable diesel producers beginning April 1. To be eligible, manufacturers must produce a minimum of 500,000 litres.  The announcement also includes a 2 percent biodiesel inclusion mandate beginning July 1, 2012.

"This is a big boost for Canada’s canola biodiesel sector, the environment, and for farmers," says Jim Everson, V.P. Corporate Affairs with the Canola Council of Canada. "Canola is an environmentally-sound feedstock for biodiesel and this program will help create a sustainable domestic market for canola."

Earlier this year the federal government committed to a 2 percent national biodiesel fuel mandate. The 2 percent mandate is current in the Gazette process. "This process needs to continue on schedule for July 1, 2011 implementation," says Everson. "The next important step is for government to invest in new canola biodiesel production to help create a Canadian industry, and to ensure that these jobs remain in Canada."

In the spring of 2023 OMAFA, along with the University of Guelph, gathered a group of 18 producers from the beef, sheep, and dairy sectors to support a three to four year research project related to measuring grass growth in Ontario. The producers use a Rising Plate Meter to capture grass growth and record livestock movements. This presentation will explain how the group interact/support one another, some initial findings, as well as the benefits for the research team and our farm.

The purpose of the Profitable Pastures conference is to bring fresh ideas and new research results to Ontario grazing managers across the ruminant livestock sectors. These conferences have a major focus on pasture management
