Saskatchewan’s Hog Industry has come thru some very difficult years.
The Chair of Sask Pork Florian Possberg says from about 2007 to 2013 we had long stretches of high losses resulting in the loss of production, producers and some of the larger operations went through bankruptcy and restructuring.
He says things have been improving since then with 2014 a very good year, they were able to avoid the P-E-D virus and saw stronger margins.
"2015 most of our industry has modest profits but certainly added to their equity position, and because things such as country of origin labeling and the lower Canadian dollar we look forward to 2016 being a plus year as well."
He notes overall we export about 80% of the pork we produce either to other province’s or globally.
