USDA strengthens leadership with new senior appointments

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has made significant strides in reinforcing its leadership team with the appointment of three key senior staff members in Washington, D.C. 

Eric Womack joins as the Deputy General Counsel in the Office of General Counsel. His extensive legal background includes an 18-year tenure at the Department of Justice’s Civil Division and a role as Associate Counsel in the White House Counsel’s Office.  

His broad expertise covers critical areas such as artificial intelligence and competition policy. Womack's academic credentials include being a Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law and a tenure with the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. 

Brian Sowyrda has been appointed as the Director of External Affairs in the Office of Congressional Relations. His rich experience in strategic engagement and planning comes from senior roles on Capitol Hill and various political campaigns.  

Sowyrda's professional journey includes serving as Chief of Staff for Representatives Yadira Caraveo and Xochitl Torres Small, and a leadership role in the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. He holds a Master of Science in International Relations from Trinity College Dublin. 

Elaine Trevino takes on the role of Associate Administrator in the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). Her recent contributions include addressing export-import challenges with the Department of Transportation and participating in the White House Supply Chain Disruptions Task Force. Trevino has also led the Almond Alliance of California and served as the Deputy Secretary at the California Department of Food and Agriculture, focusing on international export and trade. 

These appointments mark a significant step for the USDA in enhancing its capability to address a range of issues from legal affairs to international agriculture policy, demonstrating the department’s commitment to recruiting experienced professionals for its leadership roles.
