30 professors and staff members from Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) across the country have been chosen for the 2023 class of E. Kika De La Garza Fellows, which the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is happy to announce. The USDA is giving these fellows a special chance to learn more about USDA services and programmes that can help their institutions and students as part of its strong commitment to advancing fairness and diversity.
Commencing on July 10, 2023, the E. Kika De La Garza Education and Science Fellows will embark on an enriching journey in Washington, D.C. During this immersive week, they will engage with leaders from various USDA agencies, gaining insights into national and regional issues, policy making, and research.
The E. Kika De La Garza Science Fellows will extend their experience by collaborating with top scientists from USDA's Agricultural Research Service or the Natural Resources Conservation Service's Soil Survey Center in Nebraska.
The USDA's Office of Partnerships and Public Engagement underlines that this initiative shows their dedication to ensuring that underserved groups have equitable access to USDA programmes, services, and resources.The E. Kika De La Garza Fellows Programme has facilitated contacts with approximately 300 professors and staff members since its start in 1998, strengthening ties with HSIs.
This esteemed program, which is essential in creating a more diversified pipeline into public service and the agricultural industry, is open to accredited, degree granting HSIs with a Hispanic student population of at least 25%.
