US Corn and Soybean Crops Continue Remarkable Progress as Pasture Conditions Begin to Falter

The US Department of Agriculture released Monday, July 16, 2018 its latest Crop Progress report according to which the US corn crop is denoted as being 63 percent complete in the silking stage, well above both last year and the five-year average of 37 with a crop condition of 9 percent poor to very poor, 19 percent fair and 72 percent good to excellent. In the meantime, the US soybean crop is 65 percent blooming, ahead of last year by 16 and the average by 20 points. Setting pods is at 26 percent this week, 11 points ahead of last year and 15 points ahead of the average. Soybean’s condition this week rates at 8 percent poor to very poor, 23 fair and 69 percent good to excellent.

Looking at our three-state region across the Southern Plains this week -
 
In Oklahoma, corn silking reached 60 percent, up 12 points from the previous year. Sorghum headed reached 31 percent, up 6 points from the previous year. Sorghum coloring reached 8 percent, down 1 point from the previous year. Sorghum’s condition rates this week 7 percent poor to very poor, 39 percent fair and 54 percent good to excellent. Soybeans emerged reached 95 percent, up 11 points from the previous year. Soybeans blooming reached 17 percent, up 9 points from the previous year. Soybeans setting pods reached 5 percent, up 2 points from the previous year. Cotton squaring reached 55 percent, up 6 points from the previous year. Cotton setting bolls reached 15 percent, unchanged from the previous year but up 2 points from normal. Cotton’s condition this week rates at 41 poor to very poor, 43 fair and 16 good to excellent. Conditions of pasture and range were rated at 22 percent poor to very poor, 30 fair and 47 good to excellent.

In Kansas, winter wheat harvested was 99 percent, near 97 last year and 95 for the five-year average. Corn condition rated 6 percent very poor, 14 poor, 32 fair, 42 good, and 6 excellent. Corn silking was 64 percent, ahead of 52 last year and 53 average. Dough was 17 percent, ahead of 5 last year and 7 average. Soybean condition rated 3 percent very poor, 12 poor, 40 fair, 41 good, and 4 excellent. Soybeans blooming was 59 percent, ahead of 42 last year, and well ahead of 31 average. Setting pods was 13 percent, ahead of 6 last year and 4 average. Sorghum condition rated 2 percent very poor, 5 poor, 34 fair, 54 good, and 5 excellent. Sorghum headed was 10 percent, ahead of 5 both last year and average. Cotton condition rated 1 percent very poor, 3 poor, 33 fair, 56 good, and 7 excellent. Cotton squaring was 69 percent, well ahead of 25 last year and 35 average. Setting bolls was 2 percent, equal to average. Pasture and range conditions rated 8 percent very poor, 23 poor, 40 fair, 27 good, and 2 excellent.
