Some Good News Coming Out Of NCBA Convention

The President of the Canadian Cattlemen's Association was south of the border last week for the National Cattlemen's Beef Association Convention.

Bob Lowe says it was good to actually be able to talk to their US Counterparts in person.

He says there was a lot of good news coming out of the event.

"I don't believe I've ever heard CattleFaxs forecast as positive as it was this time. Simply because the world's running out of cattle and the demand is continually increasing. I mean, there's drought to get through, but if you can hang on to your cows, keep them because you're gonna be well paid."

He notes the Global Agri Trends presentation was very positive as it focused around the fact that they expect the demand for beef to increase three times faster than the supply.

The other good news he heard at the convention centered around Country of Origin Labelling and concerns that the U-S Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack might be looking at reinstating COOL.

"He has said he maintains that he will not bring forward any kind of a Country of Origin Labeling thing that is not trade compliant. And part of that, I'd like to think is because we've still got that billion dollar tariff threat hanging over their heads that we can initiate anytime for a reason. And that would be a huge reason for that to be initiated. So basically, as long as Vilsack is Secretary of Agriculture, Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling is a is a dead horse."

Lowe cautions that we'll always hear certain states and organizations promoting Country of Origin Labelling, but based on what they heard at the NCBA Convention, that will not happen.
