Railways Prepare To Move Large Crop

Railways Prepare To Move Large Crop
Oct 16, 2017

Are Canada's railways ready for another bumper crop?

That's the question being asked by farmers as harvest wraps up for another year, with above average yields for cereals and canola.

Keystone Agricultural Producers (KAP) President Dan Mazier says he wouldn't be surprised if there was another backlog similar to 2013-14.

"There's so many things that can happen to the railways. Even when the railways are having problems, they don't come out and say that. They just keep on going as business as usual...That's our biggest problem."

Mazier notes one thing that was never explained was the poor performance by CP Rail last year which seemed to be overshadowed by the superior performance by CN Rail.

He adds even though the situation has improved from a couple of years ago, the railways are not being held fully accountable.

A study last spring by the Canada West Foundation found that lack of capacity cost farmers across Canada a combined $6.5 billion in 2013-14 and 2014-15.
