Province of Manitoba Signals its Commitment to Grains Innovation

Today’s Speech from the Throne in Manitoba included a nod to the Global Agriculture Technology Exchange (Gate) project, spearheaded by Cereals Canada. The Honourable Anita R. Neville, P.C., O.M., Lieutenant-Governor of the Province of Manitoba delivered the Speech from the Throne to open the Second Session of the 43rd Manitoba Legislature.

“Our new vision for downtown Winnipeg includes Manitoba’s agricultural sector,” said Neville in her remarks. “The new Global Agriculture Technology Exchange campus will bring visitors to Manitoba, and Manitoba’s grains to the world at a time when we need to diversify and expand our markets.”

Located in downtown Winnipeg, Gate is to serve as a hub for food innovation, supporting Canadian farmers, domestic and global customers, and the entire value chain. It aims to uphold Canada’s position as a leader in nutritious, high-quality food ingredients. In the 2024-25 crop year, Canada is expected to export 25.4 million tonnes of wheat to over 80 countries, making us the third-largest exporter and the top exporter of high-quality, high-protein wheat for the second consecutive year.

Gate Capital Campaign Chair JoAnne Buth expressed her deep gratitude for the commitment from the Province of Manitoba. A former Manitoba Senator and long-time agriculture advocate, Buth echoed Neville’s sentiments, emphasizing that “Manitobans come together to do big things.” Launched in September 2024, the Gate Capital Campaign has received an initial commitment of $18.4 million from provincial grower organizations and Cereals Canada.

“We are pleased to see Gate and Manitoba’s agriculture sector included in today’s throne speech,” said Dean Dias, chief executive officer of Cereals Canada.

“The Gate project is driven by ambition and a vision for the Canadian cereals industry to grow and thrive in both domestic and international markets now and in the future,” added Dias. “We look forward to working with the Province of Manitoba, and all levels of government, to bring this world-class facility to downtown Winnipeg.”
