Pedersen Says PST Decrease Will Have Big Impact On Farmers

Mar 06, 2020
Manitobans will be paying less provincial sales tax starting July 1, 2020.

The surprise announcement was made Thursday in conjunction with the province's new made-in-Manitoba Green Levy.

The PST will drop one percent from seven to six per cent.

"Farmers pay a lot of PST," said Manitoba Agriculture & Resource Development Minister Blaine Pedersen. "Just look at at $50,000 pick-up. If they were going to buy that, that's $500 less they are going to pay for it. On truck parts and their everyday life expenses, where they're paying PST. They will be paying less money, and it's more money on their kitchen table for farmers all across Manitoba."

Also on July 1, the Manitoba government will implement a flat $25-per-tonne Green Levy.

"This is great news for Manitobans in general, but it's certainly for the ag community, also," added Pedersen. "We are going to exempt drier fuels. Barn heating and greenhouse heating, will be exempt from the carbon levy."

He notes the court challenge against the rising federal carbon tax is still going ahead.

Pedersen says, as of Friday morning, there has been no response from the federal government.

The province says the average Manitoba household will save $200 in 2022 through Manitoba’s flat Green Levy alone, adding up to more than $700 over the next five years
