PED Confirmed On Fourth Manitoba Farm

Sep 26, 2014
A fourth farm in Manitoba has been infected with Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED) virus, less than a week after a third farm was confirmed.

The latest case was confirmed September 24th at a sow farm in southeastern Manitoba.

The province says all four confirmed farms are in the southeast region.

The two cases discovered in September were sow farms while the two earlier in the year were finisher.

The PED virus is generally fatal in very young animals, however older animals can recover.

The virus is not transmitted to humans or other animals and is not a food safety risk.

The province reminds producers to follow strict biosecurity practices and if symptoms arise to contact a veterinarian immediately.
