Ontario Hog Prices Show Stability Heading Into Late April

Ontario hog markets remained relatively stable heading into the last week of April, with the 100% base formula price recorded at $217.77 per ckg (100 index) for the week ending April 25. This marks a modest increase from the previous week’s $214.40, though prices remain lower compared to the same period last year when the 100% formula price was $226.25 per ckg.

The average dressed weight price in Ontario for the week was $246.99 per ckg, with a low of $217.91 and a high of $275.02. Market hog volumes totaled 97,732 head, representing 79% of the previous year’s numbers.

Weaned and Feeder Pig Values:

• Weaned pigs averaged $56.62 per head.

Across Canada:
National hog slaughter numbers were 392,460 head, about 92% of the previous year’s levels. The Quebec Pool Price rose slightly to $204.09 per ckg (100 index), while the Manitoba Calculated Hog Value stood at $226.30 per ckg.

Currency Trends:
The Canadian dollar closed the week at $0.7213 USD, slightly lower than $0.7316 at the same time last year.

U.S. Market Overview:
U.S. federally inspected slaughter totaled approximately 2.43 million head for the week, 5% above the previous year’s pace. Early weaned pig prices averaged $45.30 USD per head, while 40-pound feeder pigs sold for an average of $82.94 USD per head.
The USDA pork carcass cutout value closed at $96.03 USD/cwt.
