As you know, two major beef processors in our province are dealing with outbreaks of COVID-19 with one of them closing temporarily and the other cutting their shifts from two to one.
Leader of the Opposition, Rachel Notley of the NDP, would like to see the plant in Brooks close temporarily as well as the Olymel facility in Red Deer. In a statement from yesterday, Notley commented "It is unconscionable that we now have a situation where hundreds of people have contracted a deadly virus all because the UCP couldn't see past the supply chain to the people who work there. By dismissing the concerns of these workers by not having staff on site over a month ago, Jason Kenney, Devin Dreeshen, Jason Copping have put lives at risk."
The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 401 is also calling for the temporary closure of the two remaining facilities that continue to operate.
The Cargill facility near High River remains temporarily closed. The JBS Canada facility in Brooks continues to operate with reduced staff and shifts. The Olymel plant in Red Deer remains in full operation at this time.
