Michigan Potato Production Michigan's 2014 potato crop was forecast to be 15.7 million hundredweight (cwt), 1 percent lower than a year ago, according to the USDA, NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office.

Planted acres, at 43,000, decreased 1,500 acres from last year. Harvested acres, at 42,500, were down from 44,000 in 2013. Average yield, forecasted at 370 cwt per acre, was 10 cwt higher than the previous year, and if realized, represents a record high. The first potato stocks estimate for the 2014 crop year will be released December 12, 2014.

Nationally, production of fall potatoes for 2014 is forecast at 406 million cwt, up 3 percent from 2013. Area harvested, at 926,200 acres, is down 2 percent from the previous forecast and slightly below the 2013 estimate. The average yield forecast , at 439 cwt per acre, is up 14 cwt per acre from a year ago.
