BROOKINGS, S.D. - McCrory Gardens will host Houseplants and Post-Holiday Plant Care workshop with David Graper, SDSU Extension Horticulture Specialist.

The program will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at McCrory Gardens (Gardens, 631 22nd Ave. in Brookings), starting at 6:30 p.m. The workshop is free and open to the public.

This workshop will teach attendees how to take care of their houseplants and holiday plants. Some common maintenance techniques like repotting, pest monitoring, identification and treatment as well as some simple rejuvenation methods for those old plants will be discussed.

If you received a holiday plant, like a poinsettia, we will show you how to take care of those too.

"Just about everyone has an older plant sitting around the house that just isn't growing like it used to.  I will try to provide some tips on how to get that plant looking better or maybe the best thing to do is take some cuttings and start over," said David Graper, SDSU Extension Horticulture Specialist.  "Some of those holiday plants are best recycled to the compost bin but others can be kept as houseplants and brought back into bloom again with the proper care."

Participants are also encouraged to bring along plant samples and pictures  of ailing houseplants so Graper can take a look at them and offer advice.
