Let’s Talk About Supply Management

Mar 21, 2013

The topic of supply managed agricultural industries is of current interest to many Canadians, particularly those living in rural areas and farming communities.

The federal Glengarry Prescott Russell Liberal Association is hosting an evening with some key players involved in supply managed industries in order to engage in a conversation with and hear from their constituents.  The event is on Thursday, March 28 from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. at the St. Isidore Arena and will feature Ron Versteeg, VP, Dairy Farmers of Canada, Laurent Souligny, former Chairman, Egg Farmers of Canada, Peter Clark, an international trade negotiator and Cathy Jo Noble, a leading public affairs specialist.

In its invitation for the event, the association notes that supply management continues to be supported by all political parties and has served the Canadian public well, sustaining over 300,000 jobs, accruing $12 Billion in annual farmgate revenues while at the same time receiving no government subsidies.   Canada has signed several bilateral trade agreements, including NAFTA, that excluded supply management, while allowing access to foreign markets for other agricultural commodities.  New agreements are currently being negotiated with the European Union and Pacific Rim countries.
