Forward hog contract prices are looking better than they once were.
Tyler Fulton is Director of Risk Management with Hams Marketing Services.
"Forward contract prices are probably up at the higher end of their range," he said. "We're actually seeing a little bit of support in lean hog futures and that's showing up in what producers here in Canada can price their hogs for. When you look out into the summer months, we've got several weeks that are being offered for more than $200 per pig. By any measure that's a really good price."
Fulton notes U.S. cash prices are struggling a little bit more.
"We've got abundant supplies and so it's pressuring the prices the packers are paying," he commented.
