Farmers union flies to DC for family farmers

Sep 13, 2023

Washington, DC is buzzing with agricultural advocacy as 300 National Farmers Union (NFU) members have come together for the Fall Legislative Fly-In. The week promises numerous engagements with Congressional representatives and federal agencies.

The upcoming 2023 Farm Bill is at the forefront of discussions. NFU's President made it clear: a suitable farm bill is of utmost importance. With family farmers and ranchers taking the stage, their voice holds significant power in shaping policy directions.

A highlight of the Fly-In was an insightful session with USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack. He underscored the farm bill programs and emphasized the significance of USDA schemes dedicated to preserving family farms.

The Farmers Union has two main goals:

  • They’re all for the Fairness for Farmers part in the 2023 Farm Bill. This ensures a level playing field for family farmers and ranchers in the market.

  • They’re pushing for policies that not only protect farmers from climate change but also ensure farms are safe and secure.

This advocacy isn't a one-time thing. For over a century, since 1909, members have been visiting DC, making sure family farms remain at the heart of American agriculture.
