Edible Bean Harvest Underway

Sep 04, 2020
Manitoba's dry bean harvest is underway.

Dennis Lange is a Pulse Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture.

"Over the last week to week and a half we've had a few reports of growers being able to harvest a few different types of edible beans," he said. "One of the first ones to come in has been light red kidneys. There's been yield reports in that 1,800 lbs per acre range. This past week, we've heard a few more growers pulling into some pinto beans and yields are in that 2,000 lbs range, which is typical...Still very early stages yet in the dry bean harvest."

Lange says overall the quality is looking good, with some bacterial blight but nothing that's really affected the yield.

He notes there were about 95,000 acres of pinto beans this year, which is a record. Overall, there was about 185,000 acres of dry beans in Manitoba.
