Conservative critics say eliminating the carbon tax for on-farm uses would save producers close to $1 billion

Sep 22, 2023

Two Conservative critics have said removing the federal carbon tax on on-farm uses of natural gas and propane would save producers $978 million between now and 2030.

The numbers are contained in a statement released Monday by Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Agri-food and Food Security John Barlow and Associate Minister for Agriculture, Agri-food and Food Security Richard Lehoux.

The statement says the saving would come into place if Bill C-234, which was put forward by the Conservatives and calls for this type of tax removal, was passed.

It has passed three readings in the House of Commons and two readings in the Senate and is now at the Senate committee level. So far, there has been no activity on that committee.
