Benefits of CPTPP Participation Expected to Build as Additional Countries Join

The Founder of Polar Pork Farms says the Canada's participation in the Comprehensive Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership will create export opportunities for Canadian pork and those opportunities will grow as additional countries join.

In early March Canada and 10 other Pacific Rim nations committed to move ahead with a multilateral free trade agreement in spite of the U.S. pull out.

Florian Possberg, the Founder of Humboldt based Polar Pork Farms says, because Saskatchewan only consumes 10 to 15 percent of the pork produced in the province with the rest exported to other countries or other parts of Canada, trade is essential.

Florian Possberg-Polar Pork Farms:

The Trans-Pacific area is really quite a large consuming area.

The 10 countries that we have access to amount to almost a half a billion people, including Japan and other key trading partners.

I think we already trade with about nine out of those 10 countries involved in the TPP.

Not only is it a significant market for us but, because a lot of these countries are fast growing economies, they're potential growth markets for us as well.

And because TPP is going to be an influential group of countries there's also the potential for additional membership in TPP with countries that could be very significant like South Korea and Taiwan and a few other countries, Philippines.
