$2B clean hydrogen investment for Alberta: Premier Smith and Minister Jean

Premier Danielle Smith and Minister of Energy and Minerals Brian Jean issued the following statement on Linde’s announcement to build a $2-billion clean hydrogen and atmospheric gases facility in the Industrial Heartland:

“We are thrilled with Linde’s announcement of its intention to build a $2-billion clean hydrogen and atmospheric gases facility in Fort Saskatchewan’s Industrial Heartland.

“This world-class facility will play a critical role in the success of Dow’s Path2Zero Project, supplying it with clean hydrogen energy. Alberta is a global leader in hydrogen production and in developing clean energy technology and products.

“This project will create 750 temporary construction jobs and 60 permanent jobs, and is the latest in Alberta to include carbon capture, utilization, and storage, with the target of capturing two million tonnes of carbon each year.

“Linde is building on the Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) Hub efforts and the Alberta Petroleum Incentive Program (APIP) momentum happening in Alberta. These CCUS hubs and APIP projects are creating thousands of jobs, billions of dollars of investment, and will lower our emissions. Dow’s Path2Zero ethylene cracker alone represents more than $10 billion in investment that will create 6,000 jobs during construction and 400 to 500 full-time jobs when operational.

“This is a huge win for Alberta’s energy sector and clearly demonstrates our business-friendly policies are attracting job-creating investment across the province. We look forward to the beginning of construction in 2025 and are proud to be partnering with Linde to further develop our hydrogen industry.”
