About Dandelions:

Dandelions have a bright yellow flower, and green stems that have a fuzzy or sticky texture. The leaves on the stem of the Dandelion are pointed, and almost look as though they have teeth. Generally Dandelions grow to be anywhere between 3-10 inches. Dandelions reproduce via seed, and are perennials.

Family: Composite or Aster Family

Dandelion Scouting and Prevention:

When scouting for Dandelions, it is important to check field edges, because this would be the place that this weed is most likely to occur first. Since Dandelions are common in rural areas, or on land that is not often groomed or taken care of, the seeds will blow from these locations to the outskirts of fields.

Dandelion Control:

Tillage is a very viable option in the control of Dandelions. Tillage has to be able to go deep enough to cut the root at a minimum depth of 10cm below the leaves. Glysophate is an effective chemical to help control the growth as well as spreading of this weed. This herbicide needs to be used once the Dandelion is established, and application should be done either pre or post harvest or both.
