Viterra has completed its purchase of a U.S.-based commodity management firm.

On Oct. 3, Viterra announced it acquired the grain and ingredient business of Gavilon Agriculture, headquartered in Omaha, Neb., for US$1.125 billion (CAD$1.535 billion).

Gavilon originates, stores and distributes grains and oilseeds, and feed and food ingredients to domestic and international markets.

The company also has 90 locations throughout the U.S., its website says.

"Gavilon's business has all the key attributes that support our long-term strategic plan, and allows us to provide additional value to our customers at origination and destination,"  David Mattiske, CEO of Viterra Limited, said in a statement.  "This acquisition further strengthens our global network by providing us with a material presence in every major exporting region and makes us one of the largest origination businesses in our industry."

Viterra announced its intentions to purchase Gavilon in January.

Gavilon posted a notice on its website announcing it is joining the Viterra family.

“Gavilon’s integration into the Viterra network will create new and exciting opportunities for our customers and our people,” the notice says. “The combination of the businesses will enable us to provide more value and flexibility to our customers. Producers will gain access to Viterra’s global supply chains and extensive consumer base, opening new markets for their products. “As Viterra expands and strengthens its network, new products and possibilities will open for its consumers. We will further enhance the sustainability of our supply chains, providing higher levels of quality control and reliability.”
