New Federal Strategy Links Agriculture to National Defense Goals

The USDA has rolled out a new national plan that places agriculture at the heart of the country’s security efforts. This seven-part policy focuses on defending America’s farmland, food system, and supply chain.

One important element of the plan is restricting land ownership by foreign adversaries. While only a small portion of U.S. farmland is currently foreign-owned, the policy aims to reduce potential risks and keep American agriculture in domestic hands.

In addition to land ownership, the strategy also focuses on improving the strength of food and supply chains by protecting both plant and animal health. These systems are crucial for maintaining steady food production and preventing disruptions.

A major development includes the Secretary of Agriculture being added to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). This committee examines deals involving foreign investments in U.S. businesses that could affect national security.

With agriculture playing such a critical role in the economy and public health, having USDA represented ensures food-related issues are properly considered.

While protecting agriculture, the plan also preserves the rights of farmers to make their own decisions. The USDA emphasized that this strategy is about defending sensitive systems while supporting farmer independence.

“Food security is indeed national security,” the department said, highlighting the link between a strong food supply and a safe nation.

This USDA policy sets a new direction for agricultural oversight and national security, aiming to protect both the land and the livelihoods of the people who farm it.
