USDA Approves D-SNAP for California Disaster Relief

Program Provides Food Assistance for Wildfire Victims in California

The USDA has approved Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) to help California residents impacted by wildfires and straight-line winds. Around 81,477 households in 28 zip codes across Los Angeles County are eligible for this assistance.

D-SNAP provides temporary food aid to people who do not usually qualify for SNAP but meet disaster-related criteria, including income limits and qualifying expenses.

“USDA is dedicated to helping Californians as they grapple with the aftermath of the Eaton, Hurst, and Palisades fires by ensuring families have the resources they need to rebuild and recover,” said Acting U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Gary Washington.

Applications for D-SNAP will be open from February 10 to February 18, 2025. California will provide details on the application process via local media. 

How to Apply for D-SNAP

Eligible households must live or work in a disaster-affected area and meet D-SNAP criteria. They will receive a one-month benefit, which can be used at SNAP-authorized retailers or online. For details, visit California’s Department of Social Services or call 2-1-1.

The USDA has also approved a waiver allowing SNAP participants in seven counties to purchase hot foods until February 8, 2025.
