Leaders gather to discuss H5N1 threat to cattle

Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler is set to host a pivotal forum addressing the recent H5N1 outbreak in dairy cattle, taking place on August 27 at the N.C. State Fairgrounds. This event, part of the "Conversations with the Commissioner - Emerging Issues in Agriculture" series, will involve key discussions with top officials from the FDA and USDA.

Commissioner Troxler will be joined by figures such as Dr. Robert Califf, the Commissioner of the FDA, and Dr. Eric Deeble, USDA Deputy Undersecretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs.

Other notable participants include dairy industry representative Dr. Ben Shelton and State Veterinarian Dr. Mike Martin. They will explore the coordinated response efforts to H5N1 and discuss strategies to fortify the dairy sector against such animal diseases.

The session will include a roundtable moderated by Joe Reardon of NASDA, focusing on industry preparedness and response strategies to animal disease outbreaks, enhancing the collective understanding and approach towards managing such crises.

The forum is open to the public free of charge, though prior registration is necessary. Attendees can register via the NCDA&CS webpage to engage in these critical discussions, aiming to enhance resilience and response to animal health challenges within the agricultural community.
