Syngenta has launched a new product to market designed to help canola farmers have better crops.

Pelta seed pelleting technology helps farmers achieve accurate seed placement, greater survivability, and stronger stand establishment.

“It’s a unique seed coating that makes canola seed uniform in size,” Karen Ullman, seedcare product lead with Syngenta Canada, told Farms.com. “Most bags of canola seed have a range in the size of seed in a bag, but with Pelta we’re removing that guesswork.”

The coating brings the size of each canola seed up to a targeted thousand seed weight, Ullman added.

Using Pelta and achieving an even stand is important for producers.

Having even canola stands helps with decision making, Ullman said.

“If you have an even stand, the crop is going to be maturing at the same time,” she said. “That makes it easier for farmers to make crop protection decisions, and can even lead to even desiccation at harvest.”

Pelta has been in development for about 10 years.

Trials along the way suggest this kind of technology can add bushels to a farmer’s canola crop.

“Our trials in 2021 show an increase of about two bushels per acre,” Ullman said. “Because with even seed size and singulation, this allows plants to maximize nutrients and water usage.”

For the 2022 growing season, Pelta technology is available on three CANTERRA SEEDS varieties:

  • CS3000 TF – a mid-maturing TruFlex™ canola with Roundup Ready® Technology hybrid that boasts high yield potential, straight cut potential and unique blackleg and second generation clubroot resistance.
  • CS4000 LL – a mid-maturing, LibertyLink® canola hybrid that features blackleg and clubroot resistance, strong standability and straight cut potential.
  • CS2600 CR-T – an early-maturing TruFlex™ canola with Roundup Ready® Technology hybrid with enhanced clubroot resistance and straight cut potential.

Producers who are using Pelta technology have been sharing their experiences online.
