Guide to Inspecting and Restoring Damaged Irrigation Setups
Storms and strong winds can severely impact farm irrigation systems, especially center pivots. These systems may tip over or collapse due to uneven, wet ground or high wind speeds.
Laxmi Prasad from North Dakota State University Extension states, “Anchors and foundations may shift or fail in softened ground, undermining the system’s stability.”
Misaligned towers can lead to drivetrain stress and gear damage. Electrical control panels are prone to water damage and lightning strikes. Flying debris can break mechanical parts, worsening the damage.
Begin post-storm inspections by disconnecting all power to the system. Ground the system properly and never touch it if an electrical hazard is suspected. If needed, contact a licensed electrician. Watch for other risks like broken lines and chemical exposure.
