The Official Grain Grading Guide and variety designation lists will be changing as of the first of next month.

The Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) is reminding all producers and the industry of these modifications, an organization release said yesterday.

Individual official standard samples will be used to assess frost, heat stress and mildew damage in wheat from Western Canada, the release said. This process will begin in the 2018-19 crop year.

The updated version of the Official Grain Grading guide will be available Aug. 1 on the Canadian Grain Commission’s website. The guide is used by CGC inspectors as a reference for grading grains, oilseeds and pulses.

In addition, the new variety designation lists will be enacted Aug. 1, the release said.

This change involves the reclassification of 25 varieties of Canada Western Red Spring wheat and four varieties of Canada Prairie Spring Red Wheat to the Canada Northern Hard Red wheat class, if these varieties do not meet the revised quality parameters of their current classes, the release said.

CGC is implementing these changes to maintain Canada’s reputation as a consistent supplier of high-quality milling wheat as well as to ensure Canadian producers are recognized for growing premium classes of wheat.

The Canadian Grains Commission is the federal agency responsible for establishing and maintaining Canada’s grain grading system and ensuring grain quality, the release said.
