The contest closes on May 31

Alberta’s ag community still has opportunities to win three prizes of $3,000 for dedication to recycling twine.

Farmers have until May 31 to enter The Great Twine Round-Up.

Producers are encouraged to collect used plastic baler twine, label the bags with the name of the individual farm or local 4-H club, and take a picture with the bags at a collection site.

More bags of recycled twine equal more contest entries.

Cleanfarms and the Agricultural Plastics Recycling Group launched the contest in October 2024 and its $12,000 in prize money with support from the provincial government to promote used plastic baler twine recycling.

Three of the four $3,000 prizes go to Alberta 4-H clubs, and one goes to an individual farmer to donate to an ag charity of his or her choice.

The contest has awarded its first prize.

That went to the Northern Lethbridge 4-H Beef Club.

Chase Guliker and his father Ben collected 31 bags of twine.

The prize money will be used to improve club programming.

“A lot of our members were working hard to collect twine for the Cleanfarms competition, just one of our members’ entries happened to win,” Treena Van Hierden, leader of the beef club, told the Lethbridge Herald on Feb. 12.

The final day to enter the contest is May 31.

The remaining winners will be drawn on June 18.

A virtual prize award event will be held in July 2025, the contest’s rules say.
