Ontario’s Innovative Farmers and the Soil Network join forces

Ontario farm groups unite to strengthen soil health and innovation efforts

The Innovative Farmers Association of Ontario (IFAO) has played an important role in helping farmers adopt new practices and strengthen their commitment to soil health. Its journey began in Huron County, guided by agricultural leaders who believed farmers should take the lead in developing solutions.  

Early innovators, including pioneers in no till farming, worked with limited tools but brought strong creativity, determination, and a passion for progress. Their efforts helped shape modern practices such as no till, strip tillage, and cover cropping, which today are widely accepted and easier to implement. 

A defining feature of IFAO was its farmer-led model. Instead of waiting for research institutions to deliver solutions, farmers conducted their own trials first. Researchers then responded to these real on-farm questions. This unique approach encouraged practical learning, information sharing, and a culture of continuous improvement.  

Over time, equipment knowledge also advanced, and dealers became strong supporters of conservation practices, helping farmers adopt new methods with confidence. 

As agriculture continues to evolve, IFAO recognizes that innovation must also expand to include soil protection, water quality, and environmental stewardship. This shift has encouraged a natural partnership with the Ontario Soil Network (OSN). Both groups share similar values, members, and goals, making the decision to join forces a logical and forward-looking step. 

The merger represents an important transition from one chapter to the next. By combining the strengths of both organizations, the new united effort will bring farmers a wider range of tools, ideas, and support systems. Leaders believe this change will increase effectiveness and help the agricultural community respond to emerging challenges with stronger farmer-led solutions. 

The new partnership aims to continue the legacy of initiative and learning established by IFAO while embracing OSN’s focus on soil and clean water. Together, they plan to maintain a practical, science-based approach that reflects the needs of Ontario’s farmers. 

This next chapter promises greater impact, stronger collaboration, and a unified effort to protect soil, support clean water, and promote long-term sustainability across Ontario’s agricultural landscape.
